We don’t do it often, but this year my family went ALL OUT for Halloween. We happened to have a trip to Kansas City, Missouri (where my parents grew up) planned for the weekend before Halloween. It’s this weekend every year that my uncle Charlie throws his big Halloween bash. Saying Charlie takes Halloween seriously is an understatement (he literally keeps his Halloween decorations up all year), so we knew we really had to bring it with our costumes.
Shannon and I decided to be the creepy sisters from The Shining. Here is our inspiration clip from the movie (skip ahead to :30). And I have to say, I think we rocked it.
Our parents were from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”, and I think their costumes were pretty spot on, too. How fun is my family? This took about 100 tries to get one of Shannon and me not laughing.
And in true Colborne fashion, we brought bloody marys to the party with quite an impressive spread of fixings.
I will leave the rest of the party up to your imagination, but it really was impressive.
Thinking ahead for your next year’s costume? You could absolutely recreate our creepy look from The Shining. It really was easy, and you might already have some of the items in your closet or around your house.
Here’s what you need:
- A sister or friend who somewhat resembles you!
- Blue peter pan dresses
- These are very thin (probably because they cost $7) – just be prepared for that!
- They run small, I recommend sizing up, especially if you are tall.
- It takes awhile to be delivered, so order early if you want to avoid rush shipping.
- Mary Janes
- White knee highs
- White hair bows
- Pink ribbon
- Fake blood for clothing
- For the fake blood on our faces, we just used a dark red lip gloss
My parents “Birds” costume was pretty easy too.
- Old white button down shirts
- Fake blood for clothing
- Black birds
- They cut small holes in the shirts, put the bird’s feet through the holes and attached the birds feet to little pieces of card board so they would stand up. It worked great!
Hope you all had a great Halloween. This year is going down in the books as one of my favorites!
Love this! Hope we get to re use the costumes again one day!
Me too!
OMG ! Spooky crazy ?, but I bet it was tons of FUN ! ?
We had so much fun!
